At LearningWorks I cotaught an Art Club with a fellow teacher candidate, Luke Hadley. We were able to build relationships with these students over the course of seven weeks. We demonstrated our respect for these students by acknowledging their strengths and positive behaviors and by hanging their collaborative artwork up on the walls each week.
Students created self portraits to express who they were as individuals. Our second lesson was a collaborative self portrait photography alteration. Students took photos of one another and then altered them with mixed media. This gave students the opportunity to collaborate at a level they were comfortable with. This lesson was accessible to all students because it was open with modifications built into the lesson.
To celebrate the successes in Art Club, we held an exhibit for friends, family and teachers to view. Students played an active role in selecting, preparing and hanging their work. This emphasized ownership and required students to collaborate, which had been scaffolded throughout Art Club.
